Oil spill 'doubles' damage to Rayong coast – A major oil spill in the seas off Thailand has caused significant environmental damage.
On 25 January, an oil slick was spotted on the open sea approximately 20 kilometers southeast of Map Ta Phut Port in Rayong Province. The oil was first seen near a Petroleum Refining plant that is used to load oil tankers offshore, and after an investigation, it was determined that the oil was coming from a leak in a subsea pipe connected to this. The discovery of the oil leak prompted the provincial authorities to declare the area a disaster zone, but on 9 February, oil was found leaking from a second split in the pipe, triggering an immediate and complete shutdown of all operations as the authorities mobilized teams to deal with the worsening crisis and to limit its impacts at sea and on the shoreline.

Following this, on 10 February, approximately 5,000 liters of oil were found to have collected into a slick near the ‘single point mooring’ used to pump oil on and off tankers. At this point, the company requested the assistance of the Thai Navy, who responded by using helicopters and boats to spray dispersants onto the oil, while also deploying aerial drones to monitor the situation. These operations have now been brought to a conclusion.

Initial investigations by a local Petroleum Refining plant point to damage to a flexible subsea pipe as the likely cause. Two tears in the pipe are thought to be the source of the oil slick, but the first of these has now been successfully bound and repaired, and no more oil has been seen leaking from the second.
In light of the damage caused by the leak, it is essential that investments in environmental protection are stepped up, and the appropriate authorities should carry out immediate checks on all similar oil pipes and related infrastructure. Over a longer timeframe, safety standards should be reviewed and revised, and future checks should be both stricter and more frequent. Moreover, to minimize damage to the environment and to local communities, participation in safety checks should be broadened to encompass a much wider and more inclusive range of stakeholders.
